When Dani Alves initially arrived at Barcelona, the club were in a complete mess, reeling from the shock exit from the UEFA Champions League group stage, coupled with inconsistent performances in La Liga.
Four months later, Barcelona have successfully turned it around, thanks in part to the services of Alves. The veteran defender has offered a strong presence inside the dressing room, encouraging the young players to play for the badge.
However, as we head towards the final phase of the campaign, the club will soon need to come to a decision regarding the future of the Brazilian.
Alves’ current contract at Camp Nou expires at the end of the season, with Diario SPORT recently dropping a comprehensive report on his future.
It appears Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez is keen on keeping hold of Alves beyond the summer. The Spaniard has been left impressed by the right-back’s performances and wants to keep him at the club for his influence in the dressing room.
However, the decision will be up to the club’s board members including Mateu Alemany and Jordi Cruyff. They are set to hold a discussion surrounding the future of the 38-year-old come the end of the season, where they will assess the performance of the player.
Dani Alves, for one, has expressed his desire to remain at Camp Nou. The Brazilian international is happy with his life in Barcelona and wants to continue playing for the club, which, in turn, could help him prepare better for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Alves is unlikely to hold out for a lucrative contract either and has stated that money won’t be an issue when it comes to signing a potential extension.
The 38-year-old only demands one thing: sincerity. If he is surplus to the requirements at Barça next season, he wants the club to inform with transparency, especially amid interest in Cesar Azpilicueta.
One would imagine the pursuit of the Chelsea defender could go a long way in determining the future of Alves next season.
