Ben Chilwell has posted an image on Instagram of himself training with a ball, which has prompted an excited response from Chelsea teammate Mason Mount.

Chilwell, 25, is a long-term injury absentee that’s not played for Chelsea since picking up a knee injury last November.

The left wing-back was in some of the best form of his career prior to the setback, so he’s been a significant loss in the Blues XI during the last few months.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel explained earlier this month he doesn’t expect Chilwell to return before the end of this season. He explained the England international is likely to link up with the academy as part of his recovery before re-joining the first team.

Chilwell uploaded an encouraging post of himself in some form of training yesterday, though.

Like a new signing for Chelsea

It’s surprised many just how much the Blues have missed Chilwell.

He was in scintillating form at wing-back before the knee problem, providing an incredible engine up and down the flank.

The wing-back combination of Chilwell and Reece James was destroying teams for a brief period of time.

Tuchel’s preferred formation definitely works better when the aforementioned duo are starting in the wide roles. It’s a partnership that England boss Gareth Southgate has deployed, too.

Everyone is desperate to see Chilwell make his return before this campaign ends, but fans must be a little more patient still.
