Thiago Silva played the full game today as Chelsea slaughtered Southampton, and the Brazilian was barely troubled at the back all day.
In playing the match, Silva triggered a record. He’s now beaten Glenn Hoddle’s record to become Chelsea’s oldest outfield player. Hoddle and Silva are also two of the only players who the Blue have signed after the age of 35 – the third was Didier Drogba for his second chance.
He’s had a couple of rocky games recently, but overall he’s been a superb signing for us, and rarely looks his age.
Thiago Silva officially #Chelsea’s oldest outfield player today, beating Glen Hoddle to that record. Still world class. #SOUCHE

It’s a great achievement by Thiago, and given he’s looking likely to stay at least one year longer, he could set a pretty high bar at the club.
Players are able to play for longer and longer these days, but few have the physique and the class to get close to 40 at the very top level like Silva has.
