Spanish news outlet MARCA has dropped a bombshell report on the future of Frenkie de Jong. The midfielder is regarded as one of the most important players for FC Barcelona, with coach Xavi Hernandez rating him highly.
The Barcelona head coach has even recently voiced his desire to keep hold of de Jong for the foreseeable future. And while the player, too, is happy with his life at Camp Nou, his stance is starting to shift.
Although he remains a regular starter, it appears the Dutchman is not happy with his role in his team as Xavi often tends to sub him out during crucial junctures of proceedings.
To put things into perspective, de Jong has featured in 19 league matches under Xavi this term. But he has played the whole ninety minutes in only seven of them, three of which came during the first few weeks of the coach’s tenure at the club.
Since the start of February, Frenkie has completed a game only twice, with the former Ajax starlet often being subbed in for Gavi.
Even in the recent defeat to Rayo Vallecano, the Dutchman wasn’t able to complete the game and was subbed off around the hour mark, despite the injury of Pedri.
It has left the midfielder unsettled with his current role at Barcelona and the player is seemingly considering an exit after the end of the season, especially amid interest from Manchester United.
The Red Devils have recently hired Erik ten Hag, who has an excellent relationship with de Jong and could ask him to reunite at Old Trafford next season.
With Paul Pogba leaving the club, Frenkie de Jong could have an ideal opportunity to not only become United’s main man in midfield but also reunite with his old Ajax pals in ten Hag and Donny van de Beek.
At the same time, though, the Dutchman does still have a good rapport with Xavi and any move away from Camp Nou is unlikely, especially if Man United fail to qualify for the Champions League next term.
