Former Blues winger Paul Canoville believes Chelsea have already had a potentially “better” defender to replace Barcelona-bound Andreas Christensen.
Obviously, as things stand, there is yet any official confirmation on Christensen’s possible move to Barcelona this summer.
Although, a recent report from The Telegraph claimed that it is widely accepted that the 25-year-old, whose contract with Chelsea expires at the end of the season, will join Barcelona on a free transfer.
Rather than signing a possible replacement in the transfer market, Canoville is convinced that Chelsea have already had a suitable candidate in one of their most promising loanees, Colwill.
“Andreas has been superb for our club Chelsea since coming from the academy and learning [his] trade on loan,” Canoville wrote on Twitter.
“[A] European and world champion. Wish him well with Barcelona.
“Levi Colwill is going to be by far the better player!”
The 19-year-old has had an impressive season at loan club Huddersfield Town, who currently sit fourth in the Championship table.
Switzerland-based research group CIES Football Observatory even recently named Colwill as the second-highest rated U-20 defender outside Europe’s five top leagues.
While Anton Ferdinand described the young Chelsea talent as a “Rolls-Royce” defender, similar to his brother Rio.
There are other defenders such as Sevilla’s Jules Kounde who have been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, but offering Colwill a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s squad next season does not sound like a bad idea given his potential.
