Rangers miss chance to win first European title in 50 years with defeat on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt in Europa League final
Match report
Rangers’ European adventure came to a heart-breaking end as they were beaten on penalties by Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final in Seville.
After the two sides played out a 1-1 draw, the decisive moment saw former Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey have his penalty saved, and Frankfurt subsequently ran out 5-4 winners in the shootout.
Gers fans were in dreamland when Joe Aribo gave them the lead out of nothing, the Nigeria international taking advantage of some terrible defending before slotting the ball past Frankfurt goalkeeper Trapp early in the second half.
But the German side didn’t take long to level with Rafael Borre latching onto Filip Kostic’s brilliant cross to finish from close range.
The final went into extra-time, with both sides going very close to grabbing a winner – Borre was denied by Calvin Bassey’s brilliant recovery challenge in the first period.
However, the best chance of extra-time fell to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side as Trapp somehow denied Ryan Kent from point-blank range in the final moments.
And they were left to rue that missed chance as Frankfurt ran out winners.
As for Rangers, their 50-year wait for a European crown goes on.
