Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe reportedly wants to sign Mason Mount, but new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has other plans and wants to hand the midfielder a new contract.
NEW CHELSEA CONTRACT FOR NEWCASTLE TARGET MASON MOUNT
The Sun reported last month that Newcastle are interested in signing Mount from Premier League rivals Chelsea.
The report in the British tabloid claimed that Chelsea are worried that the £70,000-a-week England international midfielder (The Sun) could be tempted to leave, maybe not this summer, but in 2023, if they are unable to tie him down to a lucrative contract.
Manchester City were also mentioned as an interested club in the report.
However, The Daily Mail have now reported that new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is planning on talks on a new deal for Mount
TRANSFER BLOW
In our opinion, Chelsea’s decision to open talks with Mount over a new contract is a blow for Newcastle.
Mount is one of the best young midfielders in the Premier League and has been superb for Chelsea.
The 23-year-old can only get better in the coming years, and we can understand why Newcastle want to sign him in the future.
However, a new contract would see Mount commit his long-term future to Chelsea, who are likely to remain as competitive as they are now.
