Memphis Depay has had a fairly impressive debut season with Barcelona as he sits at the top of the goalscoring charts for the club.

The 28-year-old arrived at Camp Nou from Olympique Lyon last summer on a Bosman deal and made a lively start to life as a Barça player. Injuries and the January signings of Ferran Torres and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang did affect his game-time in recent months.

But Depay has done well more often than not when given a chance. He has netted 11 goals in 23 La Liga matches and is the club’s leading goalscorer for the campaign.

Despite making a solid impression, Depay finds himself at the centre of transfer speculation heading into the summer. The Netherlands international had signed only a two-year deal with the Catalan giants and will enter the final 12 months of his deal.

Furthermore, he finds himself behind Torres, Aubameyang and Ansu Fati in the pecking order. At the same time, Barcelona are also pushing to sign Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich in the summer. So, Depay finds himself being linked with an exit.

According to Oriol Domenech, Lewandowski is Barcelona’s priority for the upcoming window and they will make efforts until the final moment to try and sign him. Bayern, though, are reluctant to sell their primary source of goals even though they risk losing him for nothing next year.

But, in case they sign a replacement, the German champions would consider the possibility of letting the Poland captain. However, if they hold firm, Barça could miss out on signing Lewandowski. In that scenario, Depay is expected to stay put at Camp Nou.

The former Manchester United star has proven to be a versatile operator capable of playing on the left and through the middle. Holding on to him would provide manager Xavi Hernandez with added depth and quality.

Depay himself has recently admitted that he wishes to continue at Barcelona. So, if Lewandowski does not arrive, there is a possibility of the Catalans handing the Dutch forward a new contract this summer.
