Despite arriving on a free transfer after a year-long exit saga, Memphis Depay was Barcelona’s marquee signing last season. He looked well settled into the team under Ronald Koeman, scoring two goals and assisting one in his opening three appearances.
Despite going through a turbulent path, he consistently remained Barcelona’s best attacker.
That is, until, the Barcelona board pulled off deals for three forwards in the winter transfer window including Ferran Torres and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – the two players who have take over Memphis’ starting spot.
As a result, SPORT claims that Barcelona have put the Dutchman on the market and want to make a profit on him this summer. He has several options to leave the club, and while he wants to stay, he could agree to an exit if he finds a suitable sporting and economic option.
Memphis had signed a two-year deal when he signed for the Catalan giants, and apparently, wants to renew his contract amidst exit rumours.
There have been reports in the recent past claiming that Memphis has been approached by Premier League clubs, with Tottenham Hotspur specifically linked to him.
It seems Barcelona are open to offers near the €40 million range even though he has about 12 months on his contract.
Despite not playing regularly under Xavi, Memphis is still Barcelona’s top scorer with 11 goals in La Liga. Aubameyang chases him with nine, despite only playing 14 games.
The former Manchester United forward does not have place in Xavi’s setup and only has options to stay in case Barcelona are unable to sign a striker in the summer.
Robert Lewandowski is their preferred pick, and there is growing confidence that the move will go through in the summer for nearly €40 million. How this impacts Memphis’ future remains to be seen.
